Our Philosophy
We believe in raising animals in a natural, low-stress environment and providing them nutritious and sustainable food.
Natural and Low-Stress
Our pigs are free to roam in their paddocks, all of which include mud pits for hot days and run-in shelters in case of rainy or cold weather. When new litters are born, the mother sow enjoys the "birthing or farrowing pen" where they can care for their piglets and receive regular check-ups. When the time comes for a pig to go to market, he is loaded onto a truck the night before and allowed to acclimate before riding twenty minutes to our USDA-certified butcher. We do this to ensure that our pigs are calm and relaxed when they arrive at the butcher, which not only eases our minds, but as any chef would point out also preserves the flavor of the pork. After all, a stress-free animal makes for better tasting pork.
Nutritious and Sustainable
Our pigs receive a balanced and varied diet, according to the season and availability of food sources. Aside from eating locally produced feed ground from corn and barley and other supplemental food sources such as spent brewers' grain from a local beer brewery, our pigs also enjoy the indigenous Jerusalem artichoke, wild mustard greens and lambs quarters. The Jerusalem artichoke (as a perennial) and mustard & lambs quarter (as naturally occurring weeds) require little-to-no maintenance (no tractor, no tilling), which saves a significant amount of human and mechanical energy. Sourcing locally helps us not only to maintain the health of our animals, but reduces cost and supports our local agricultural economy.
